How Can I Find A Good Sex Therapist?

July 29, 2025

What Should I Look for When Seeking a Therapist?

Your Sex Therapist may be trained as a Registered Psychotherapist, Social Worker, or Psychologist, but regardless of designation, they should be a licensed mental health professional certified by the global organization AASECT (American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists), or a provincial organization such as ASTO (Association of Sex Therapy in Ontario).

Sex therapy extends beyond just learning strategies for enhancing sexual health. It is a holistic approach that considers the many factors influencing your overall well-being and relationships. Depending on your goals and preferences, your therapy may include topics that are not explicitly about sex but are deeply connected to your ability to cultivate a fulfilling and satisfying sex life and relational experience.

Some of the areas that may be explored include assertiveness, rejection sensitivity, emotional regulation, overcoming people-pleasing tendencies, navigating neurodiverse and neurotypical relationship differences, family patterns, healing from trauma, body image, and systemic influences.

Sex therapy is not just about addressing challenges—it is an opportunity for personal growth, deepening self-awareness, and meaningful transformation in all aspects of your life.
