What is Implications Counselling?

Assessments and written reports are often required for select fertility treatments, such as IVF or “third party reproduction/conception”, the term used when an individual or couple uses donor eggs, sperm, embryos or a gestational carrier to grow their family. These BRIA services include a counselling session and one report. Patients will receive the report to share with their fertility clinic. (Extra time and fees may be necessary at times).

Yes! More and more women, from those who are pregnant to those in perimenopause and menopause are now wondering if they have ADHD and BRIA can help.

BRIA Nurse Practitioners offer ADHD assessments for those who have difficulty with their attention, concentration, and organization. After this assessment, you may be prescribed suitable medication. Can I get help for my insomnia in perimenopause/menopause?

Yes! Sleep issues are among the most common and bothersome symptoms for peri/menopausal women, triggered by hot flashes, night sweats, and bladder issues. In addition, stressful life events and “sleep anxiety” often worsen insomnia. BRIA’s sleep specialist is a Registered Psychotherapist who provides trauma-informed, collaborative and strengths-based care, incorporating Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), Solutions Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness. Book sleep support here.

Does BRIA prescribe medications?

BRIA’s expert MD Psychiatrists offer medications (such as antidepressants) for women ages 18-65 across reproductive life stages, when needed, after a comprehensive assessment.

BRIA’s Nurse Practitioners may prescribe ADHD medications (such as psychostimulants) after a thorough assessment. Nurse Practitioners may also prescribe Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) or other medications after a MEDI Hormone Assessment for PMS or perimenopause symptoms.

Remember that medications are only part of the treatment plan; often therapy, sleep management, and lifestyle changes are required for a complete care plan (and BRIA offers all these services too!)

Do BRIA MDs prescribe medications during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

BRIA MD psychiatrists are experts in treating pregnant and postpartum women. They also stay up to date with current safety evidence. After a MAXI Mental Health Assessment, medications, such as an antidepressant, may be prescribed. The BRIA Psychiatrists will review the benefits and risks of medication use with each patient, in particular when they are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Psychiatrists also provide “Preconception Counselling” for those who are on psychiatric medication and want to learn about the safety of their medication when planning a pregnancy or undergoing fertility treatment. Start by booking a MINI Mental Health Assessment here.

How can therapy help me?

There is strong medical data to show that talk therapy is a very effective treatment for many mental health problems. Individual, couples, and group therapy can help people make substantial and long-standing changes in their mental health. There is also evidence that physical brain changes take place during therapy. Patients who go through therapy actually develop new and healthier ways of thinking, feeling and interacting with other people; they feel less stressed and can function better in their day-to-day life.
